Epsom Pro-Am
The Epsom Pro-Am is played every year in May. It is the biggest event in
the PGA South Region when measured in prize money. The Professional Prize
fund is more than £7,000. Spaces are usually available for Corporate teams
. Please call David Bowles on 01372 72166 for next year's details. Overnight
accomodation is available at the nearby Holiday Inn. Details
Bob Wynn, the Club Professional in 1980 probably never expected his original
Pro-Am would develop into the event it is today. His foresight of hosting
an event for 40 Club Professionals, a guest invited by them and two of
our own club members in 40 teams as part of the Surrey PGA Pro-Am circuit
has been vindicated as the event has grown to be one of the richest Pro-Am
prize funds available on the PGA Southern Region circuit.
In its 30 year history the tournament has been graced with European PGA
Tour victors, including Doug McLelland, as well as Ryder Cup stars Paul
Way and Peter Butler. Celebrities of the fame of Ed 'Stewpot' Stewart from
BBC Television and the unique Ian Wright of Crystal Palace and Arsenal
have also taken part.
Despite magnificent prizes being on offer, the event awaits its first hole-in-one
by either a Professional or an Amateur. Maybe next year.
The event is now a major contributor to the Club Captain's charity each
year with 50% of profits being given. The balance is invested in Club infrastructure,
with patio furniture, shoe cleaning equipment and quality course signage
being some of the items that have been provided.
The Pro-Am continues to attract an excellent playing entry with fantastic
support from our sponsors and club members. The event is run by a small
club committee who are able to call on many club volunteers to make the
day special. But the event owes its prestigious reputation for excellence
to the club Professionals Bob Wynn (1980-1993), Ron Goudie (1994 - 2008),
Stuart Walker (2008 to date) and the Head Greenkeeper (currently Mark Harvey)
and his staff who, over the years, have been the consistent glue that has
made the event what it is.
