England Amateur International Golfer. Horace was probably our greatest club golfer.
Horace Castle was the son of Abercrombie and Jane Castle. According to the Ancestry files, Horace was one of nine brothers and four sisters. 2nd Lt. Horace Guthrie Castle R.E. won the M.C.
Born; 1877 in Burgess Hill, Sussex. Died : March 1955 Aged 77. In the Parish of Cuckfield. Marriage: Horace married Lilian Georgina Shaw in 1909 but she sadly passed away in 1911. ( See Lahinch G.C. Comments below ).They had a son Dennis Guthrie Castle. Horace remarried Dorothy Margaret Hewitt in 1921 , they had three children, Cecile, Stephen and Colin. Census Entry 1911.
He worked at the Stock Exchange.
During the early days as golf clubs were being created, it was quite common for very good amateurs to be members of a number of clubs.
Horace Castle was a member of Epsom, Chiswick, Fulwell and Lahinch and possibly others. He was one of the foremost amateur golfers of his time.
During the beginning of the 1900`s Horace Castle held the course records at Chiswick 64, Epsom 71, Lahinch 72 and Sunningdale 73.

A talented local lad who played the course as a boy, earned a few bob as a caddie and club maker under Epsom Professionsal McWhatt and later went off to the US as a young man to seek his fortune. He won the US open in 1909 and in 1921 he was appointed the third President of the USPGA.

He was a local racehorse trainer and our Club Captain in 1947. He won the 1943 Derby with his horse “Straight Deal”. Due to the war it was raced at Newmarket.

He later presented the club with a shoe from the horse but it`s now gone missing!
Larry was a member of Epsom Golf Club for a few years. He was recognised as one of the very best amateur footballers of his day. He joined Sutton United from Leatherhead in 1965. He was a midfielder.

"Signed by Sid Cann after an eye-catching performance for Leatherhead against Sutton in the 1965 Surrey Senior Cup Final, Larry quickly established himself as one of the finest players in amateur football and helped himself to 79 goals from midfield in his first 4 seasons. Another to join Wycombe in 1970 where he went on to win three league titles, Larry returned to the Lane in 1974 aged 30 but went on to play a further 532 games in amber & chocolate (excluding his memorable testimonial against Spurs), taking his career total for the U’s to 786, a club record. He also netted 134 times. Larry joined Barrie Williams’ coaching team and was team manager for the 1980s title successes, later returning as reserve team and then first team manager in the 1990s. 48 England Amateur caps."
In 1970 Larry joined Wycombe Wanderers. In a four year spell they won the Championship three times. Larry returned to Sutton United in 1974 and made a further 532 appearances. His last match was in 1984.
He also played for Sutton in the FA Cup fourth round match against Leeds United. He played in two Wembley finals, The Amateur Cup and FA Trophy.
Larry played a total of 786 matches for Sutton United, a club record and scored 134 goals. He also made 48 Amateur International appearances for England. Larry also played for Great Britain.
Larry was recently inducted into the Sutton United Hall of Fame.

Sid Barnes was a former jump jockey and held a licence between 1951 to 1976. Sid rode approximately 250 winners. He was the leading jockey in Sweden for two seasons.
In later life Sid was a stalwart of our club and he ran a taxi company.
In 1996 Sid donated a claret jug, known as the Sid Barnes Trophy. This is for a fourball matchplay match between the Men and the Juniors
Winner of the Club Championship Scratch Competition (the Brooks Challenge Cup) 8 Times in 1981, 1984, 1985, 1990, 1993, 1996, 1998 and 1999.
Winner (with Andrew Pelling) of the Brodie Helder Cup, Mens Foursomes Matchplay Knockout. 7 times before 1996.
Winner of The 1995 Evening Standard Singles Matchplay Knockout from over one thousand participants! The final was played at West Byfleet with a great following of Epsom members. The trophy was presented by Bernard Gallacher.
Played for Surrey County A Team. Won all 7 singles played. Won 6 Foursomes and halved one other.

Gary is now living the West country (2013) but visits us occasionally. He won the Men's Open Day in 2013 with his great friend, Andrew Pelling.
